American Sign Language Tutoring to Sign with Confidence

A Visual Language with Its Own Culture

ASL is a complete language, with its own grammar, expression and community. Learning it builds real communication with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and it is a world language many schools offer for credit.

Lessons are one-on-one, online or at our Newport Beach office, and follow your child’s class or goals. Each student is matched with a tutor by personality, goals and learning style.

Every Skill Your Child Needs

Areas of American Sign Language tutoring and what lessons focus on
Area What lessons focus on
Fingerspelling and numbers The manual alphabet and number system, signed clearly and read at a natural pace.
Vocabulary Everyday signs for home, school and friends, built up a little in every lesson.
ASL grammar Sentence structure, use of space and classifiers, which work very differently from English.
Facial expression and body language The expressions and movements that carry grammar and meaning in ASL.
Receptive skills Understanding other signers, from slow, simple sentences to natural conversation.
Deaf culture The Deaf community, its history, social norms and communication etiquette.

How It Works

Step 1

Assessment

We start by finding where your child is today in signing and understanding signs, and what they want to be able to do.

Step 2

Tutor match

Your child is matched with a tutor by personality, goals and learning style, so lessons feel natural from the first session.

Step 3

A plan built for your child

An individual plan follows your child’s class or goals, with real practice in every lesson rather than memorized word lists.

Step 4

Feedback and progress

Your child gets clear feedback on handshapes, expression and fluency in every session, and you get regular progress updates.

Meet your child’s tutor before you commit.

A free first lesson is a low-pressure way to see how sessions work and how your child connects with their tutor.

The After Class Tutors Method

Tutors build real communication through practice, not memorization. Your child signs and reads signs in every lesson, and learns the culture behind the language.

  1. Strong foundations

Clear handshapes and fingerspelling from the start.

  2. Real conversation

Signing back and forth in every session, not just drills.

  3. Confidence building

A supportive place to ask questions and try again.

  4. Signing and understanding

Expressive and receptive skills built together.

  5. Culture in context

ASL taught alongside Deaf culture and etiquette.

  6. Independent success

The goal is a student who can keep learning on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child really learn ASL online?

Yes. Live video lets the tutor see your child’s hands, face and body, and give feedback in real time. Sessions are also available at our Newport Beach office.

My child has never signed before. Is that okay?

Yes. Beginners start with fingerspelling, numbers and everyday signs, then move on to simple conversations.

Can you help with my child’s ASL class?

Yes. Tutors support ASL I–IV classes, using your child’s materials, vocabulary lists and upcoming tests or presentations in lessons.

Does ASL count as a world language at school?

Many high schools and colleges accept ASL for world-language credit. Check with your child’s school for its own policy.

Can we try a lesson first?

Yes. K–12 students can book a free first lesson to meet a tutor and see how sessions work.

What do we need for online sessions?

A reliable internet connection and a device with a webcam, in a well-lit spot where the camera shows your child’s hands and face clearly.
